Imagery

“Xiang” originally meant silk dyed pale yellow, and the pale yellow itself. Xiang leaf is the colour of a newly sprouted leaf before it has turned green.

Origin

Classical Chinese kept a dedicated word for pale yellow — xiang. As Lichun’s turning colour it catches the instant a branch has just budded and the leaf still wavers between yellow and green. Read the four in sequence and you can watch the yellow deepen: Drift, Pollen, Leaf, and then the turn.
