Solar term
立春 · Start of Spring — "东风解冻,蛰虫始振,鱼上冰。"
Imagery
The colour of pine pollen — a tender yellow with a thread of green running through it; the look of yellow just beginning to grow out of spring.
Origin
Songhua is pine pollen, the fine pale-yellow dust pines shed when they flower. Tang poets already drank it in “pine-pollen wine”, and Song cooks baked it into pastries. As Lichun’s succeeding colour it carries the first stirring of spring — yellow that is still soft, not yet hot.
