惊蛰 · Awakening of Insects — "微雨众卉新，一雷惊蛰始。"

Imagery

A prized deep purple-red of the Song court, named “Obedient to the Sage”. Almost black in shadow, wine-red in light.

Origin

Shunsheng was a much-coveted dyed colour in the Song dynasty, its name an honorific. As the combining colour it seals Awakening of Insects at its most intense: the term’s reds have gone as far as red will go before thunder breaks and the insects wake.
