Douyin (抖音) is a short video social app on creativity targeted at the young generation. Users can select songs through this software and shoot 15-secs or 30-secs short music videos. This App has been launched in all major mobile app stores in China by ByteDance in 2016. Now it's become one of the popular social platforms to build up brand awareness as part of the China marketing strategy

A year later, ByteDance launched their international version of Douyin as know as Tik Tok. As the user base grows in Tik Tok, the content comes with more varieties. There are contents like art, landscape, film and television drama clip imitation, spoofs and others. The video contents were made creative and interesting. We can also witness user's creativity and culture come from different nations such as Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the United States, Austria, India, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Russia, Greece, Afghanistan and Argentina all in one app.

Here are the main differences between Douyin and Tiktok:

1. Registration (region restriction)

Douyin's registration and login methods are mainly via Chinese mobile numbers, or WeChat, QQ, Toutiao and Weibo. The account is divided into two categories: Personal account and Corporate blue V account.

TikTok's registration and login methods are the overseas mobile number, or Facebook, Instagram, Line, Kakao account and Twitter account. There are Corporate or Brand authentication accounts available.

Douyin and TikTok apps are operated totally separately. At the moment, TikTok is not available in China intentionally.

2. Search and content push

The search algorithm mainly relies on keywords. Accounts with more followers and likes are more likely to rank higher. If it is a Business (Blue V) account, it will be ranked higher than the standard accounts.

You can directly search for global TikTok users, but first, you need to know its account name. The content distribution flow on Tiktok is similar to Facebook, with priority and preference for localization. Priority content will be pushed to the users according to the region based factor, if it belongs to the similar region, for example, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan belong to East Asia. Basically, It can only be seen by people in that particular region or country. Consider that even if the same video is pushed to many countries, the local users in Japan still prefer to see comments from Japan, while South Korea users prefer to see comments from S.Korea. Basically, comments can only be seen through the comment section by themselves, and the order of comments will change accordingly.

3. Monetization

Taobao and Jingdong ( are selling products through the Douyin window. Experts can add products from shops in the merchandising window.

Tiktok content creators can put a link and redirect users o Amazon to buy products. However, it seems that for the time being, users in some countries and regions can't use Amazon to monetize. However, content creators can still direct followers to Youtube or Instagram to convert there.

4. Content from celebrities

Music, dancing, funny short videos are the most popular content on both apps.

As Douyin has become one of the top social media platforms in China, an increasing number of celebrities have been opening accounts on the platform as a new way to express their personal image and interact with fans. But some celebrities are doing better than others, and it appears those with comedic content have been finding greater success.

Now that Douyin is one of China’s most popular social media platforms, an increasing number of brands are thinking about how they can incorporate the app into their social media marketing strategies. But every social media platform has its own unique style of content, and Douyin is no exception.

Three of the top ten accounts in March were comedy related. The top-ranked account was “暖男先生,” which features the popular comedian Guo Donglin (郭冬临). His account gained an impressive 8 million new followers in one month. The Chinese singer and actor Joker Xue (Xue Zhiqian 薛之谦), whose account has grown at a rate of 3.5 million new followers per month for the past two months, is ranked eighth. Xue is known for his offbeat personality, and his account is filled with his popular comedy skits.
